Playa las Canteras – the # 1 beach of Las Palmas

The most beautiful, well-known and diverse beach of Las Palmas and most likely also one of the most appealing urban beaches in Spain is undeniably the famous Canteras Beach. Even visitors and immigrants from Rio de Janeiro in Brasil find much pleasure in this magnificent Canary beach. Here, mainly locals but also tourists stock up on nearly everlasting sunshine during the whole year. Sunbathing is certainly not the only activity on this diverse place: Surfing, snorkelling, beach soccer and volleyball, dining in numerous excellent restaurants, partying in untiring bars and clubs and countless shopping facilities make sure nobody will ever get bored at the Playa las Canteras.

The other four beaches in Las Palmas are maybe less known but convince with their own particular charm.

Confital Beach – beach recommendation # 2

The Confital Beach in Las Palmas’ district La Isleta is usually empty on weekdays and thus offers a perfect opportunity for peace and recreation. Its sparsely vegetated and open landscape reminds a lot of the neighbouring islands Lanzarote or Fuerteventura. A surfer’s paradise is certainly the surfspot Playa del Confital; here ‘lives’ one of Europe’s finest right waves, perhaps even the best in the world. Locals claim proudly that the wave’s quality even stands up to those in Hawaii, the “Mother of Surfing Islands”. Several locals prefer the Playa del Confital over the somewhat more lively and well-visited Playa las Canteras. In 2008 the Canteras beach-front promenade was extended until the Playa del Confital and now the two Canary beaches are finally joined and invite for wonderful walks.

Playa las Alcaravaneras – beach recommendation #3

The Playa las Alcaravaneras borders the Las Palmas’ district of the same name. The beach is about a kilometre long and impresses with its yellow-golden sand and its almost wave-less sea. The advanced pier of Puerto de la Luz harbour protects the beach from the Atlantic’s powerful waves and thus allows its visitors to enjoy smooth and calm waters. The nearby Real Club Nautico, the ‘royal’ aquatic sports club, offers opportunities to wind-surf, scuba-dive and sail at the Playa las Alcaravaneras and its surroundings.

Playa de San Cristobal – beach recommendation # 4

In the south of Las Palmas there is the colourful fishermen’s village San Cristobal which is part of the city by now. Its adjacent beach carries the same name and amazes with its pitch-black colour and round stones. This picturesque, quiet place is definitely worth a visit. Especially the curious stone column that protrudes from the water and can only be walked to when the tide is out rewards a stopover at San Cristobal. The easiest and most agreeable way there is probably by bicycle along the ‘Paseo Maritimo’, a pleasant boardwalk lined with shops, restaurants and cafes. A visit in San Cristobal is best topped off with a pleasant dinner at on of several first-rate fish-restaurants and the blissful view at the village’s colourful and friendly fishermen’s houses.

Playa de la Laja – beach recommendation # 5

A bit farther south yet our ‘virtual tour’ of the Canary beaches through Las Palmas leads to the Playa de la Laja. This lovely, black, sandy beach stretches over 3 kilometres and convinces with the incomparable idyll of the Canary beaches.
