Break Pico del Alto

Surfing directly in front of the "fishermen's castle".

This extraordinary spot is located directly in front of the cliffs of El Roque, one of the fishing villages on the Canary Islands which is most worth seeing. This small town was constructed like a castle on a huge cliff which rises over the Atlantic Ocean.

Those who take the time after surfing to roam the alleys, which are sometimes not much wider than a metre, will be rewarded by a small restaurant at the end of the village, on the outermost tip of this rock which rises into the Atlantic Ocean.

This restaurant certainly offers
one of the most spectacular locations of all restaurants in Gran Canaria. While you are having a taste of Canarian seafood or the typical Canarian dish papas arrugadas (Potatoes with a typical Canarian sauce) at a moderate price, the waves explode sometimes up to four metres to your right, to your left and in front of you. A unique ambience! It’s hard to believe that only few tourists find their way there…

The roaring surge and the waves of Pico del Alto are accessed via rocks. The spot “works” best during low tide. Those who want to go surfing here should have a healthy portion of experience, strong nerves and insanity. Those who recommend this surf spot to beginners have a highly ironic, not to say sadistic streak in themselves …

From the restaurant overlooking the surf spot
you have a marvellous view of the surf spots in front of the village El Altillo, San Andres and, on the other side, of the spot Pico del Paso. This is generally one of the most beautiful and most easily accessible viewpoints in order to overlook the surf spots at the North coast of Gran Canaria.

Those who still have some energy left may take a walk into the valley directly behind the small town. After only 15 mins., you will have this wonderful view (see picture above) with a huge banana plantation in the front and the village El Roque and the blue ocean in the background.
