Snorkelling territory La Barra

The „natural aquarium“ in the middle of town

The easiest accessible diving spot of town is the unique „La Barra”. This limestone shelf lies about 200 meters from “Las Canteras” beach and therefore, protects the beach from the wild and enormous waves of the open Atlantic.

Especially at low tide the area between the limestone shelf and the golden beach turns into one big, natural, lukewarm and clear azure blue “swimmingpool” with a water depth of hardly ever more than 4 meter. Because of the protected position this area accommodates especially rich in species and diverse flora and fauna.

For about 30 Euro one can get good diving googles including a snorkel and start to explore the snorkelling paradise “La Barra” for little money. Those who have not seen the underwater world in front of the town’s gates, who never swam among swarms of various colourful fish, who have never lost themselves in the fascinatingly silent and multi-coloured underwater world has missed out on the highlight of the town Las Palmas.

Just a few flaps of the fin from the pulsing quarter “Santa Catalina” and the “Paseo de las Canteras” one can literally dive into an alien landscape. First the absence of noise – just the muffled grumble of the waves, accentuate the almost ghostly atmosphere. Then the bottom of the sea moving beneath you: ranging from snow-white to dark-green it makes your pulse go slower and it seems like your time, moves slower, at least for a few moments.

A curious shot-coloured fish boldly clambers about in front of your face, then suddenly stops and looks into your googles-and-snorkel covered face. You turn your back on the little rascal and move on to the next attraction. When you turn around again to see the little fish again, you notice that it followed you. For a moment you feel like you are part of this alien world. You surface and take a deep breath. All of a sudden you are back. Back in the middle of Las Palmas. A big grin in your face and the thought in your mind “I don’t want to leave here”…
