Las Palmas’ Town Hall

The old town-hall buildings on Santa Ana Square

The Casas Consistoriales (= the Town Halls) were built in the middle of the 19th century. The original town hall had been built in 1515 but was burned down in 1842. Together with the old town hall the island’s public archives were also destroyed and with them the records of several centuries of Canarian history.

These iron statues have been built by the French sculptor Boutellier. In 1979 all municipal activities were transferred to the district Ciudad Jardin. Hence, only events and plenums of community and regency still take place in the town hall. Now and then, well-off citizens celebrate their weddings in the Casas Consitoriales’ noble atmosphere.

Unfortunately, the building is still being renovated at the moment and thus covered with plastic sheeting, but it will soon glisten in new splendor.
